De-escalation Seminar: Fundamentals of Realistic De-Escalation

Two men having a disagreement

In an increasingly complex world, the roles and responsibilities of employees are continuously evolving. One of the most significant shifts has been an enhanced focus on de-escalation - employing techniques to peacefully diffuse potentially dangerous situations whenever possible. Our  Fundamentals of Realistic De-Escalation course, modeled after real-world law enforcement concepts, provides the essential training for employees at every level to manage and mitigate tense situations with minimal use of force.

Course Overview

This comprehensive course centers on the crucial yet challenging expectation for employees to gain compliance without resorting to physical force. While the use of force may be necessary in certain circumstances for the safety of employees and customers, the primary goal of our de-escalation tactics is to solve problems with the minimum use of force required.

We believe that an understanding of human behavior is key to de-escalation. Our approach combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing employees to handle real-world situations effectively, particularly when dealing with individuals experiencing mental health crises or altered perceptions of reality.

Through our course, you'll learn how to establish contact, build rapport, and influence outcomes positively. We'll also cover how to use incident stabilization tactics and effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills to foster connection, even when subjects present difficulties.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this one-day training, you will be able to:

  • Define De-escalation: Understand what 'de-escalation' truly means, its objectives, and discern when it is applicable and when it is not.

  • Tactical Principles & Decision Making: Discuss the tactical principles of de-escalation, risk assessment, and decision-making.

  • Situation Evaluation: Rapidly assess situations to determine the viability and likelihood of successful de-escalation.

  • Force Science Approach: Apply the "Response-ability Zone" and the "7 Ts De-Escalation Evaluation Model" to identify needed tactics for supporting the de-escalation process.

  • Effective Communication: Establish rapport and use effective persuasion principles when dealing with difficult subjects, including those who are mentally ill, applying the "Behavior Influence Stairway Model."

  • Strategic Application: Enhance de-escalation efforts by strategically combining human performance research findings, observations of subject behavior, and psychological tactics for negotiation and influence.

  • Use of the TEB Matrix: Apply the "Thought/Emotion Behavior" (TEB) Matrix to quickly recognize whether a subject is in "conflict," "crisis," or has "contaminated" thinking and discern the most effective persuasion strategies.

  • Employee & Customer: Balance the desirability of peaceful conflict resolution with maintaining officer and public safety.

  • Effective Communication: Recognize common barriers to effective communication and promote better practices such as active listening.

  • Understanding Fair and Impartial De-escalation Principles: Discuss how professional de-escalation techniques embrace the principles of fair, impartial, and rightful treatment of individuals during crisis.

  • Post-Incident Analysis: Assist investigators and other personnel in assessing uses of force by identifying pivotal behavioral and situational factors that indicate whether de-escalation efforts could have been feasible or effective.

  • Community Engagement: Help community members and media outlets understand what realistic de-escalation entails and the challenges that subjects may present that can inhibit an employee's ability to safely de-escalate.
